Nursing Leadership in Complex Environments
Course Description
This course will focus on providing students with the skills to navigate the challenges and opportunities that confront nursing leaders in complex healthcare environments. Techniques to develop successful leadership methodologies will include the use of multiple technology platforms including telehealth, social media, e-leadership along with other emerging tools for the optimization and development of the nurse leader. Emphasis will be placed on the responsibilities of the nurse leader to influence health policy at the local, state, national and international level.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the framework for health policy initiatives. (PLO 9)
- Discuss healthcare policy as it applies to system leadership. (PLO 2, 3 )
- Discuss and critique components of driving change that impact health policy. (PLO 6, 9)
- Examine the impact of technological innovations, such as telehealth, on development of health policy. (PLO 7)
- Analyze application of health policy in evidence-based practice and research literature. (PLO 1, 5, 9)
- Synthesize grassroots policy initiatives as they relate to the nurse leader. (PLO 4, 6, 8, 9)

Week 1:
Pre-Planning for Week 7 signature assignment – The “Signature Assignment,” is a collaborative group assignment, explained in week seven. Review the requirements for this project during this first week. Your professor will post an announcement in week one with your assigned group number and the names of two and occasionally three students, all randomly assigned to each group.
Week 1 Discussion Question – Define “political competence” and discuss at least one example of how a nurse leader has or could demonstrate political competence at the local, state or national level. The example may be from an organizational perspective or a political challenge.
